These experiences are called Pareidolia.

Pareidolia: The tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern.

Human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness.

Workshop

This workshop is intended to show you how you can use this experience to your advantage through a brief history, examples of pareidolic images, artists who use it, and how to kickstart it into your own creative practice.

Attendees will have a working area set up similar to how the artist works in her own studio, creating random markings accidently, and then turning those markings into specific figures. Explore mark making and pareidolic exercises to create your next work of art.

Dana Donaty is known for her vibrant worlds full of characters and symbols that appear on the canvas spontaneously. She begins working on a canvas piece on the wall with a piece of canvas or paper on the floor to catch drippings, strokes, and miss-markings. She then takes the floor piece and puts it on the wall, creating her next work from this random assemblage. Thus continues a process she uses for each work.

This is a great workshop to try a new way to begin the creative process, and to get started using the materials you have around you.

Provided materials including paint, pens, and pencils.

September 18th, 11am – 2pm.

$65.00 per student, all materials provided. Snacks or drinks welcome for break.
