Paintings by Chenco
Back Room Gallery
Co-Curated by Katya Neptune
Join us for a talk with the artist on Saturday, September 27th at 3pm!
For over fifty years Chenco has wrestled with the canvas, searching for images that expose what he feels society tries to hide. He distorts reality deliberately—to confront injustice, hypocrisy, abandonment, and cruelty, while exalting the resilience of the individual. Every work begins as a living presence: Chenco studies the canvas, carries it with him, and then baptize it with story and form. The artist’s color palette is deliberate while techniques are mixed, leading to images that shift, provoke, and sometimes disturb. On the backs of the paintings, Chenco writes words, talismans, and thoughts—marks of protection and sincerity, shields against indifference.
His influences are wide—art, history, philosophy, poetry, politics—and he transforms them into monologues between himself and the observer. The paintings question, laugh, embrace, and demand reflection. They are colorful, rebellious, and expressionist, always evolving as the world itself changes.
