Workshop | Fanzine 2-Day

In this workshop, students will be introduced to the concept of a fanzine or zine (pronounced “zeen”) and shown the differences between them and magazines. Students will then learn the techniques commonly used to create their own zine! Please note that the Fanzine workshop will be held over two dates (one ticket will count for both dates) Attendees must be able to attend both dates:

Day 1: April 8th | 10:30am – 1:30pm

Day 2: April 15th | 10:30am – 1:30pm

A Zine is usually a self-produced magazine; most often photocopied and stapled by hand, its contents often reflective of the author’s idiosyncrasies. Zines have been around since the 1950’s and their topics vary from science fiction to punk rock, to poetry and personal writing, to graffiti and art, to zines about work, life on the fringe, health, anarchism, feminism, race, cats and everything in between. What all zines have in common is that their writers and editors feel like they have something important to say that they would like to share with others.

In this workshop, students will be introduced to the concept of a zine and show the differences between them and magazines. The group will discuss why people make zines and the different ways in which they can be made. Attendees will look at different zine examples and determine how they were created. A zine can be made in an edition of 500 or an edition of 1. The execution depends entirely on the maker’s budget and desire. A zine is one of the freest objects one can make!

What to expect:

During the workshop, students will do lots of photocopying, collaging, drawing and writing in order to build content for their zines. Zines can be printed using mechanical means (photocopiers) or printmaking methods (stamping, silk-screening, block printing, etc.). The workshop will look at combining these two approaches by carving linoleum blocks to give these fanzines a more individualistic look. These linoleum blocks will be used on covers and various inside pages, either before or after photocopying.

Each participant will create their own individual zine during the workshop.

The workshop will culminate in the production of a compilation zine in which each participant has designed a single page. The resulting publications will represent a unique moment in time, a collection of ideas that run the gamut from wicked to poetic.

About the Teaching Artist:

Daniel Gorostiaga has been a college and public school art teacher since 2005, in elementary (3 years), middle (1 year) and high school (since 2008). He has taught as an adjunct professor at Florida Int. Univ. (Miami) for 3 years. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida International University and a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College in New York City. He is a practicing artist who specializes in Printmaking and Bookmaking. He has participated in many exhibitions in Florida and the U.S. as well as organized and curated group shows. His zines and handmade books are in the collections of the Jaffe Center For the Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University, The University of Miami Special Collections and the New York Public Library.
